Facts
Black Americans die from gun violence at nearly 2.4 times the rate of white Americans.
Black Americans compose 59% of victims of gun homicide but only 14% of the US population.
On average, more than 12,400 Black people die from gun violence each year.
15,548 such deaths in 2021 alone—the highest number on record.
All forms of gun violence have been rising among Black Americans. Firearm homicides rose 61% from 2018 to 2021.
Firearm suicide, unintentional shooting, and police shooting deaths have also shown troubling increases over this same time period (44%, 10%, and 13%, respectively).
Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. They experience 12 times the gun homicides, 18 times the gun assault injuries, and nearly 3 times the fatal police shootings of white Americans.
Each day on average, 34 Black Americans are killed by guns and more than 110 experience non-fatal injuries.
At least every other day, a Black person is shot and killed by police.
