Sometimes the best way to experience a social problem in our world is to read fiction filled with truth. In Omar El Akkad’s 2021 novel What Strange Paradise, we encounter exactly that. In Alexandria, Egypt, a 9-year-old Syrian refugee secretly follows his uncle onto a ferry, not understanding that he is joining other migrants in a dangerous trip across the sea towards Greece.
Our discussion will be on Monday evening, November 13th at 6:30pm here at UUFSD (in the West side of Founder’s Hall). The book is beautifully written, and the members of our book club are smart and generous companions, so I hope you will join us.
