Follow the Money – Your Money

You reduce, you reuse, you recycle.  You petition your representatives. You educate yourself about clean technology.  But have you followed your money lately?  Specifically, your investments?

“It turns out that moving your investments to a climate-friendly investment option is the single most impactful thing that the average American can do for climate change,” says Alex Wright-Gladstein, founder and CEO of Sphere, which offers a fossil fuel-free index fund.  “It’s more impactful than the combination of going vegan, never flying again, driving an electric car, putting solar on your house.”

Your retirement accounts – 401(k), IRA, etc. – can fund climate solutions instead of funding climate problems.  Wright-Gladstein’s Sphere 500 Climate Fund gives you a cleaner choice.  The fund is composed of the top 500 companies in the U.S. by market value but without fossil fuel companies.   Figuring out if your investments are supporting climate solutions instead of crises can be challenging, but there are tools to help you find out.  Details on that next week.

Backpack Project
Sundays, July 6-27; 9-11:30am; Core Area

We will be collecting school supplies and backpacks Sunday mornings from July 6th to July 27th.  The Dollar Store, 5 or Less and Target are good places to shop.  For those who disdain shopping, we will be collecting money in the core on those dates and will use it to round out the supplies.  The backpacks/school supplies will be distributed to local schools for underprivileged children in need. Please pass by the SJA table in the Core Area and sign our petitions to Stay Senator Blakespear and State Assemblywoman Boener, urging them to advance these bills.

• SB 704 – Prevent the proliferation of ghost guns
• AB 458 – Ensure taxpayer dollars are spent at gun dealers who follow the law
• AB 1316 – Firearm safety education when renewing hunting license
• AB 1187 – Increased training for CA Firearm Safety Certificate
• SB 248 – Firearm safety education for new firearm purchases

No Kings Demonstrations
June 14; 10am-12pm

Let’s show our support for democracy by participating as a group in the June 14 “No Kings” demonstration in San Diego. Planned for Flag Day, which is also the day an obscene and wasteful military parade is planned for Washington DC, multiple organizations have called for peaceful counter-demonstrations nationwide with the message “No Kings.” In our area, there are gatherings planned in downtown San Diego, as well as Carlsbad, Del Mar, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, and Mira Mesa (see https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/) for details. Some UUFSD members have already indicated their plans to go to the downtown San Diego venue, and plan to wear our yellow shirts and bring our Side With Love banner. There is free parking at the La Jolla Village trolley station and the trolley is inexpensive and easy.

If you are interested in joining other UUs at one of these venues, please sign up here. There is nobody formally organizing this effort, but you can check the list and make arrangements for carpooling or taking the trolley or Coaster together.

Palestine-Israel Justice Group Petition Drive

The Palestine-Israel Justice Group is circulating two petitions. One is asking our US Members of Congress to co-sponsor House Joint Resolutions #68,69,70 and 71. The resolution proposes to disapprove the proposed foreign military sale to Israel of certain defense weapons and services.

The second is asking our US State Senators to co-sponsor Senate Resolution 224. This is a resolution a bill introduced by Senator Welch, calling for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to address the needs of civilians in Gaza.

On Friday, ICE agents in military gear stormed Los Angeles worksites and neighborhoods. Community members across the city showed out to observe these raids, and SEIU California President David Huerta was arrested as he demonstrated. He was assaulted by law enforcement, hospitalized, and remains in federal custody.
