Climate Justice

CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS

This Sunday (4/27), you, your family, friends and neighbors are invited to a very inspirational Earth Day service.  It features two speakers, Dr.Kaitlyn Lowder from The Ocean Foundation and Linda Gianelli Pratt, a Fellowship member and Chairperson to STAY COOL for Grandkids.  STAY COOL will be the Generosity Sunday recipient.  You can also look forward to our children performing an original presentation with music, “The Four Voices.”

Following the service at 11:00, the ever popular plant-based, planet-friendly Potluck returns.  Bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share.  Gather in the kitchen area to enjoy this yummy feast sponsored by the Climate Action Committee.

The Social Justice Action Committee will meet after the Potluck at 11:45 in Founders Hall.  Climate Action is one of several social justice programs under the Social Justice umbrella and we welcome anyone to attend.

Farmers across the country are trying to power their operations with clean, affordable energy. But Trump is making that harder.

Earlier this year, his administration put a freeze on a grant program that helps farmers install solar panels—leaving thousands in the lurch and delaying critical infrastructure. Now the program is back, but with a disturbing twist: new restrictions could disqualify applicants just for acknowledging climate change or mentioning their community’s history.

Climate Action and the Helping Our Neighbors are joining forces!

On Sunday, April 27th, along with your plan(e)t-based dish to share with the Fellowship, please bring these material things to share with our Fill-a-Belly friends:

• Toiletries
• Clothing and footwear of all types (male and female, young and old)
• Blankets and sleeping bags
• We do have some request for bicycles

There will be a donation table set up in the Core Area to receive your donations (please make sure that what you donate is clean and in good repair — something you’d be happy to give to a family member, not just stuff you’re getting rid of).

Mahmoud Khalil’s “Letter to Columbia” from Jail

To Columbia—an institution that laid the groundwork for my abduction—and to its student body, who must not abdicate their responsibility to resist repression,

Since my abduction on March 8, the intimidation and kidnapping of international students who stand for Palestine has only accelerated. On March 9, Yunseo Chung had to file a lawsuit and eventually seek a court order barring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from detaining her for her protest activity. On March 11, Ranjani Srinivasan chose to cross the border to Canada upon the belief that this university was ready to hand her over to ICE. Beyond the gates of Columbia, Leqaa Kordia, Dr. Badar Khan Suri, and Rümeysa Öztürk have all been snatched by the state. The situation is oddly reminiscent of when I fled the brutality of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria and sought refuge in Lebanon. Click Here to Continue Reading

Helping Our Neighbors

Beginning on Sunday, April 12th and every  Sunday thereafter, our Social Justice Action Immigration Support Team will be collecting the following 5 items to support families impacted by fear of deportation and loss of income.  Please bring to the patio: toilet paper, cooking oil, rice, beans, and laundry sheets.  Any size is acceptable. Thank you for your generosity!

Sunday Food Offering for CRC

Once upon a time, UUFSD collected non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Food Pantry at the Community Resource Center in Encinitas. Well, it’s time to do this again.

Besides being good for the Pantry and those they serve, these collections are good for us. It helps us remember our privilege and sets a good example for our children. Parents, encourage your child to select an item and bring it to the front of the amphitheater each week. Items collected will be delivered to the CRC each week and help keep the shelves stocked.
