JOURNALISTS TARGETED IN GAZA

Reports from press freedom and human rights organizations allege that Israel has deliberately targeted Palestinian journalists during the Gaza conflict, killing dozens and leading to multiple war crimes complaints. Journalists are recognized as civilians under international humanitarian law and are protected from deliberate attack.

Organizations investigating the deaths include:

Reporters Without Borders (RSF): Filed five war crimes complaints against Israel with the International Criminal Court (ICC) since October 2023, alleging that media professionals were deliberately targeted. RSF estimates that at least 210 journalists have been killed, with 56 potentially targeted due to their work.

Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ): Characterizes the Gaza conflict as the deadliest for journalists since it began tracking data in 1992. As of October 2024, the CPJ had documented 128 journalists and media workers killed and is investigating multiple cases of deliberate targeting.

United Nations: Several UN Special Rapporteurs have condemned the killing and silencing of journalists in Gaza. In February 2024, experts warned that “targeted attacks and killings of journalists are war crimes”.
