Welcome to Spring and to a month-long Climate Conversation celebrating Earth Day.
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, as a response to growing environmental concerns in the United States. Inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and increasing pollution, Senator Gaylord Nelson led efforts to raise awareness. Millions of Americans participated in rallies, teach-ins, and protests, demanding action on environmental issues. This movement led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and key environmental laws like the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. Earth Day became a global event in 1990, mobilizing over 200 million people worldwide. Today, it continues to promote environmental activism and sustainability.
Our Fellowship community celebrates Earth Day on Sunday, April 27 with a special service featuring guest speaker Dr. Kaitlyn Lowder from The Ocean Foundation, Fellowship member Linda Gianelli Pratt, the chairperson of Stay Cool for Grandkids (Generosity Sunday recipient), an original Earth Day skit with our talented kids and following the service, our popular plant-based Potluck feast.
