Assess Needs

The kiosk a the rear of the amphitheater stores a growing amount of essential equipment for Sunday services. These include seat cushions, hymnals, audio equipment and sunshade umbrellas. For the past few years, the east end of the roof has been leaking. The top of the metal door frame is rusted as a result.

Plan

Steve Bartram and Stu Anderson are newcomers to the Buildings and Grounds committee which currently has list of 22 prospective projects. $2000 had already been raised to hire a professional to replace the kiosk roof. There are other urgent needs for that money. Steve and Stu believe we can recruit volunteers to do the job for about $400 in materials and use the balance to tackle another roof in need of work - the office.

The idea of entirely replacing and expanding the kiosk has been floating around for some time. Why bother with repairing this "musty old claptrap"? There are some good reasons:

Steve Bartram estimates about $400 materials cost. And a handful of volunteers in two work shifts. First to remove the existing roof and inspect the damage. Second to replace rotted beams as needed and install new plywood, tar paper and asphalt shingles.

Design

Remove existing roof: shingles, tar-paper and plywood sheathing. Inspect the facia and rafters for rot. Remove any that are questionable.

Replace facia board and rafters as needed. Paint rot exposed surfaces with JASCO green junk or equivalent (cans in shed). Replace existing roof with same type: 7/16" OSB underlayment, tar paper overlapped and stapled, white asphalt shingles.
