Religious Education
Curriculum
We
offer programs starting at age 3 and continuing through
grade 12. (Nursery care is provided every Sunday for children
under three.)
RE Programs for Children
For Pre-School and Kindergarten children, our curriculum
is called “Chalice Children”. It introduces
the basic ideas of UU through fun activities, stories and
songs.
Our grade school curriculum consists of four units, or “pillars”.
- Unitarian
Universalism: explores the 7 UU Principles, and the history
and traditions of UU.
- Jewish
and Christian Traditions: explores the cultural heritage
from the Old and New Testaments.
- World
Religion: explores religious traditions outside the Judeo-Christian
view.
- Social
Justice & Action: explores how religion addresses
real world problems.
These subjects rotate through the regular RE year (September
through June) and are explored from many creative angles.
RE Programs for Youth
Our Junior High (JRUU) and High School (YRUU) programs
are youth groups that are largely directed by the interests
of
the youths, with the teachers acting in an advisory
role. They take on various projects based on the interests
and abilities in the groups. This provides opportunities
for
the group members to develop responsibility and leadership.
Summer Program
During the RE “off-season” we offer a fun
program for the RE kids to meet together in the core
area.
Students enjoy activities such as stories, art,
music, drama, food
or dance.
Other
Intergenerational Activities Offered by RE
Throughout the year, the RE committee sponsors a number
of fun activities for families and kids.
These include family
camping trips, dances, parent discussion
groups, sing-a-longs, social action activities, holiday
parties, sleepovers
for kids and youth, and children and youth
camps at DeBenneville Pines (the UU camp near Big Bear).
