A Memorial in the Heart of the Fellowship

More than 60 members and friends of UUFSD gathered May 2 to dedicate the first mural in the Memorial complex. The program included Karen Bullette's brief history of the project; remarks by Reverend David on the meaning of the wall; expression of appreciation to artist Jerry Thiebolt by Greg Brown; reading of the 22 names now gracing the wall by Karen Eckhardt and Kathryn Sturch; and remarks by Chris Kolb on behalf of the families. We were especially honored to welcome Andy Kay, who with his wife Mary gave the land on which our Fellowship has taken root and grown over half a century.

Social Action News - Crisis at the Food Pantry
The CRC Food Pantry is experiencing an extreme
shortage of many food items. Our volunteers
indicate that what we thought was a three-month
supply of juices and cooking oil (that we collected in
February) lasted only one month. We have been
busy expending over $500 in funds collected during
Generosity Sunday but we still see depleted
shelves each week. We have provided the
following items on a weekly basis: fruit juices,
cooking oil, dried beans, mayo, ketchup, sugar,
salt, nuts, cereal and granola bars. Clients also
request salad dressing, raisins, fruit cups and
pancake mix.
The need for food assistance has grown in the past
months, and there is no abatement of that need in
sight. In fact, we have seen an increase in
participation in the program. Therefore the Social
Action Committee is suggesting that we target our
Sunday food donations to items of scarcity such as
the items listed above.
Please know that your continuing donations are
very much appreciated!
Additional VOLUNTEERS are also NEEDED for
food distribution at the Pantry on Thursday
mornings. If you are able to help out for a couple of
hours please email or call .

Aug 1: Faith is Not a Four-Letter Word
Understanding and appreciating religious faith - a
concept that makes many UUs suspicious - may
be the key not only to coexisting with other religions
but also to fully living our own liberal religion. Robin
Mitchell will present faith as a choice that lies at
the heart of the religious impulse, that takes us
beyond questions of belief, and that can transform
our lives and our world.

Aug 15: What Are You Doing Here?
I believe
that the world is a place where we contribute to one
another. That what we contribute is as much a part
of who we are as what we believe in or what we
stand for. How did I come to believe this? It was
partly a clash between what I have seen as working
class values and upper middle class values. It was
also the result of an answer to a question put to my
friend and teacher, Jack Horner, in the early 1970s:
Is the Universe an accident? - He first quoted Albert
Einstein - God doesn't play dice! - Then he told a
story that could be seen as a kind of intelligent
design. Allan Sohl
Aug 22: The Inherent Worth and Dignity of Every Person, but What About Seniors!?
I'll discuss how other cultures treat or revere their
elderly, as well as tell a few of my own stories
dealing with seniors. For the last six years, of a 30+
years Postal Service career, I have dealt almost
exclusively with seniors, delivering mail to over 700
senior households. Don Jones

Aug 28: Parents' Night Out
If you could not participate in the Parents Nite on
June 26, you have another chance August 28.
Here's how it works: The hosts will provide food
and entertainment for up to 20
children, ages 4-12 years, at the Fellowship for
the evening (5:00 pm to 8:30 pm), while their
parents enjoy a peaceful date. What a concept!
Should be time for an early dinner and a movie, or
a walk on the beach followed by a relaxed dinner
out.
Those availing themselves of this babysitting
service pay $10 for the evening for each child.
Thus, a family with three kids would pay $30 for the
evening. You can't get a babysitter for that
anywhere!! All money collected goes to support the
Religious Education (RE) Program.
Contact Lucy Solomon to reserve your spots by calling or sending email to or sign up in the Core Area after Services on Sundays.
Sept 11: Annual Beach Party
Save the date of September 11, 4:00-7:30 p.m. (or
dark) for our annual all Fellowship Beach Party.
This was offered as part of the May 1 Service
Auction, but for those who weren't there, we can
accommodate a good crowd. The donation is
$10/person or $25/family. Come early and have a
swim. Niel Lynch will be the chef cooking up great
hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers. Great
salads and desserts round out the meal. Contact
Betsy Gilpin by email at or by phone
at to get on the list of attendees.
