School Year Curriculum

During the school year (September-June) we offer formal programs starting at age 4 and continuing through grade 12. Nursery care is provided every Sunday for children ages 1 to 3.

Once a month, usually on the last Sunday of the month, our Director of Religious Education (DRE) leads Children’s Chapel. This is a group worship service for all grades below Junior High. This fun program is held in Founders’ Hall, or in the library if bad weather drives the adult service into the hall. Classes for all other Sundays are listed below.

Toddlers (ages 1-3 yrs): No Formal Curriculum

Our talented staff will encourage young children to explore the world around them. Toddlers may be dropped off before service or attend the first part of the service with their families.
Class meets in “Pinecones”, above the upper parking lot.

Pre K & K (ages 4+ yrs): Chalice Children

Introduces children to concepts such as family, holidays, birth and death, marriage, dreams and the natural world using fun activities, rhymes and fingerplays.
Class meets in “Footprints”, first classroom up the hill past the administrative office.

Grades 1-3: Picture Book Bible Stories and World Religions

Based on picture books that teach young children about the stories of the bible and world religious celebrations through a UU lens.
Class meets in “Treetops”, second classroom up the hill past the administrative building.

Grades 4-6: Love Connects Us

The sessions explore our legacy, from both Universalism and Unitarianism, of living our connections in loving service, inquiry, and action. Children learn how our actions create a new heritage of connecting in love which will shape the faith of future generations.
Class meets in the Palmer Library.

Grades 7-8 / JRUU: Our Whole Lives

This class is restricted to registered participants. For more information, contact Darlene Kanzler, Coming of Age Program Coordinator, or Alison Crotty, Director Religious Education.
Class meets in the Montessori Building.

Grades 9-12 / YRUU: Topic Box Discussions

Youth will be exploring life and religious issues every week through conversations, conferences, worship sessions, and leadership opportunities. Youth will attend the adult service from time to time.
Class meets in the Cathy Schepps Space, next to the upper parking lot.

Summer Programs

During the RE “off-season” we offer a fun program for the kids to meet together in the Core Area or Founders’ Hall. Students enjoy activities such as stories, art, music, drama, food or dance. Nursery care is provided during the summer as usual.

Other Intergenerational Programs

Throughout the year, the Fellowship sponsors a number of fun activities for families and kids. These include family camping trips, beach parties, sing-a-longs, social action activities, holiday parties, sleepovers, and family and youth camps at de Benneville Pines (the UU camp near Big Bear).

Visiting

Visiting children are welcome in both our nursery and Religious Education classes, whether it’s just a one-time attendance or several weeks of visitation. Visiting parents are also welcome to attend our RE classes with their children, for as long as it takes the child to feel comfortable in class without you. For your child’s safety, we do ask that you fill out a visitor’s registration form so we have your contact information and any other critical information, such as allergies. Visitor’s registration forms are available at the welcome table or from your child’s teacher.
