Religious Education Curriculum for 2016-2017

During the school year (September-June) we offer formal programs starting at age 4 and continuing through grade 12. Nursery care is provided every Sunday for children ages 1 to 3.

Toddlers (1-3 yrs)   (No formal Curriculum)

Our talented staff will encourage young children to explore the world around them.  Toddlers may be dropped off before service or attend the first part of the service with their families. Class meets in “Pinecones”, above the upper parking lot.

Pre K/K (4 yrs+):  *9:00am service only  (Chalice Children)

Introduces children to concepts such as family, holidays, birth and death, marriage, dreams and the natural world using fun activities, rhymes and finger plays. Class meets in “Footprints”, first classroom up the hill past the administrative office.

Grades 1-3   Love Will Guide Us

This curriculum offers the children the opportunity to ask questions such as, “Where did we come from?” “What is our relationship to the Earth and other creatures?” “How can we respond with love, even in bad situations?” “What happens when you die?” Sessions apply wisdom from our Unitarian Universalist Sources to help participants answer these questions. Class meets in “Treetops”, second classroom up the hill past the administrative building.

Grades 4-6:   Bibleodeon

Bibleodeon is an experimental program introducing young Unitarian Universalists to stories of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles. This essential cultural educational curriculum will help give our children a knowledge and familiarity with the Bible through a UU lens. Class meets in the Palmer Library.

Grades 7-8 (JRUU)  *11:00 service only   Guest Speaker Curriculum

This year the JRUU and the YRUU will be combined on Sundays. We will be having guest speakers come in at least once a month and adress issues such as Immigration, Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, Real Life Budgeting and Accounting, Health Body Image, and much, much more. Class will be held in Cathy Schepps Space (YRUU Room), next to the upper parking lot.

Grades 9-12: (YRUU)  *11:00am service only

The YRUU Leadership has decided that this year the JRUU and the YRUU will be combined on Sundays. We will be having guest speakers come in at least once a month and address issues such as Immigration, Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, Real Life Budgeting and Accounting, Health Body Image, and much, much more. Classes will be held in the Cathy Schepps Space (YRUU room), next to the upper parking lot.

Summer Programs

During the RE “off-season” we offer a fun program for the kids to meet together in the Core Area or Founders’ Hall. Students enjoy activities such as stories, art, music, drama, food or dance. Nursery care is provided during the summer as usual.

Other Intergenerational Programs

Throughout the year, the Fellowship sponsors a number of fun activities for families and kids. These include family camping trips, beach parties, sing-a-longs, social action activities, holiday parties, sleepovers, and family and youth camps at de Benneville Pines (the UU camp near Big Bear).

Visiting

Visiting children are welcome in both our nursery and Religious Education classes, whether it’s just a one-time attendance or several weeks of visitation. Visiting parents are also welcome to attend our RE classes with their children, for as long as it takes the child to feel comfortable in class without you. For your child’s safety, we do ask that you check in with our family greeter at the start of the service to provide your contact information and any other critical details, such as allergies. After the first class, we will need your R.E. registration form (available at the welcome table or from your child’s teacher) to keep on file with this information.

Enrolling

Please visit our RE Forms page and download the Registration Form.  Once completed, please email your completed form to us at UUFSDRECommittee@gmail.com or drop a copy in Alison Crotty’s mailbox in the UUFSD office.

The suggested R.E. program contribution is $40 per child per year, but all contributions, whether more or less, are gratefully accepted and can be made online at this link  where you will also receive a tax receipt following your donation.

As this is a cooperative program, parents are required to volunteer either in the classroom or in some other way in support of the RE program for 2 hours/month.  However, parents who are new to UUFSD are not required to volunteer for the first year so they may familiarize themselves with UUFSD. Please click here to visit our online RE volunteer sign-up page for more details about teaching, assisting in the classroom or greeting new families.  If you prefer to volunteering by sharing other skills, please contact us at UUFSDRECommittee@gmail.com.

Safe Congregation Policy

To ensure the physical and emotional safety of all members of the UUFSD community, we have a Safe Congregation Policy that sets guidelines for a variety of events and situations and establishes protocol for dealing with allegations of misconduct. Please visit our RE Forms page to download a copy of the Safe Congregation Policy and other pertinent information.
